Are you feeling tired of your same old interior design style? Perhaps it is time to shake things up and step outside of your comfort zone! Trying new things and experimenting with different styles can be an exciting process that breathes new life into your living space. As an interior designer in Madrid, I understand the importance of creating spaces that not only look beautiful but also promote a sense of well-being and sustainability.
Just like in fashion, interior design can be a form of "fast fashion." Trends come and go so quickly, and you might feel like you're out of style or behind the times. But as a holistic interiors specialist, I'm here to tell you to forget all of that. Your home should reflect your style, taste, and lifestyle. It should be a sanctuary that nurtures your well-being and supports sustainable living.
For months, I was obsessed with the idea of painting my living room a darker, moodier green. It may have been because I adopted two little street cats with the most beautiful green eyes, so much so that I named one Olive. Despite my enthusiasm, my husband was hesitant and worried that it might be too bold or overpowering. I convinced him, and we took the plunge. The transformation was remarkable! The darker green gave the room a sense of excitement and maturity that was previously lacking with its builder-grade white walls.
I understand that my colour choice may not be for everyone, and I acknowledge that it might not be everyone's first choice. But it is essential to remember that your home should reflect your individuality. Holistic and sustainable interior design is about being true to yourself, kind of like the adage ´buy cheap buy twice´. I encourage you to get out of your comfort zone when it comes to interior design. It can be scary at first, but it can also lead to the most rewarding and exhilarating results. Now, friends and family who visit us leave with a feeling of needing to change up their own space, some even want to paint their space green.
Perhaps you're thinking, "Well, I live in a rental, so I can't do that." Well, here's a fun fact—I live in a rental too! Usually, if you ask your landlord for permission, they will agree as long as you return the space to its original state(now this is not all, I know that but ask and you might be surprised). One of the reasons I was so bold in my colour choice is that I knew it wasn't permanent, and I could easily change it back when it was time to move out. Don't be afraid to challenge yourself and spruce up your interior design, even if you're in a rented apartment or house.
I firmly believe that interior design is about you! It's not about your neighbours or your friends. Of course, if you're designing a restaurant or an Airbnb, that's a different topic and the end user should be thought out in great detail, however, when it comes to your home, don't be afraid to trust your instincts and try something new. It's easy to get caught up in the latest trends or stick with what's safe and traditional and taking a risk and trying something different can bring so much excitement and personality into your space.
So go ahead and try that bold wallpaper or paint your cabinets a fun colour—whatever it is that you've been hesitant to do because it's outside of your comfort zone. You may be surprised by how much you end up loving it and how it can transform your home into a space that truly speaks to who you are. And if you're feeling stuck or unsure about the process, working with a holistic interior designer like myself can help you break out of your comfort zone. I will assist you in creating a design plan that suits your style while also incorporating new ideas and elements.
Remember, interior design is an opportunity for self-expression and creating a space that supports your well-being. Embrace the journey and enjoy the process of transforming your home into a holistic and sustainable oasis
